About Central’s English Department

The English Department at Central offers courses and programs in literature, writing, linguistics, and cinema that immerse students in intensive study of how language, literature, and writing shape the world and our experience of it. The sustained and rigorous study of literature and language sharpens students' skills as readers and writers, deepens their cultural knowledge, and broadens their engagement with the diversity of human thought and experience. The critical and analytical skills students develop prepare them to be productive and active citizens of a dynamic and pluralistic society. Our graduates are ready for careers in teaching, writing, and publishing, as well as any pursuit that requires skills in written and oral communication. The seven minors offered within the Department include two writing minors, Creative Writing and Writing & Publishing. These attract students from within the English Department and across the entire campus.

Position Profile

We seek a teaching-focused creative nonfiction (CNF) writer with experience in one or more CNF genres, including the lyric essay, narrative nonfiction, interdisciplinary writing, and new media. The teaching load is 4/4 with small class sizes (average of 15) and includes upper-level creative nonfiction courses, Introduction to Creative Writing, special topics courses designed by the professor, and English courses that fulfill the needs of the Department. The position may also include a course reassigned for coordinating off-campus student internship placements.

Our faculty mentor and advise students, help organize community-building programs such as readings and literary festivals, and serve on departmental and university committees. All faculty remain actively engaged in their respective creative and scholarly fields. Demonstrated achievement in teaching, creative activity (including published work and scholarship), and service is required for tenure and promotion.

Teaching faculty are represented by the Connecticut State University chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). The collective bargaining agreement defines the processes for renewal, promotion, and tenure, while also delineating support for professional development.

Applicant Evaluative Criteria

Applicant profiles and supplementary materials will be evaluated for appointment based on the following:

Education (required):

All applicants must possess an MFA in Creative Writing, or equivalent terminal degree. Applicants with documented evidence that an MFA or PhD will be completed by the date of appointment will be considered.

Experience and Training (required):

  • Demonstrated experience teaching creative writing effectively at the college level
  • At least one book published or forthcoming from a respected venue, or substantial refereed publication of creative nonfiction essays/features/mixed media texts
  • Ability to teach a range of genres, including Creative Nonfiction, Introduction to Creative Writing, and cross-listed CNF writing courses to be determined by candidate specialization, e.g., Social Issues, Health, Humor
  • Ability to grow our network of organizations hosting student writer-interns

Compensation and Employee Benefits

In accordance with the Connecticut State University American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Collective Bargaining Union Contract, compensation for this position is at the rank of Assistant Professor for 2026-2027.
