Job Description
SUMMARY
A molecular technologist works in a laboratory setting and performs a variety of duties to analyze samples. Perform complex technical work involving molecular analysis of human biological materials with a high degree of accuracy and understanding.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
Extensive and complex steps requiring manual manipulation and pipetting,
Evaluate specimens received by the department and organize workflow to provide optimum efficiency of testing and turnaround time of results
Maintaining data analysis records with close monitoring and control
Entering data into a lab information system
Evaluation of data
Identifying issues and troubleshooting
Preparing lab equipment
Extract, denature and purify DNA from assorted specimen types
Perform PCR, hybridization, and genetic sequencing methods
Evaluate results to determine interference, inhibition, or other problems that arise
During extraction, amplification, or sequencing of DNA
Perform quality control, validation, and other quality activities to verify performance of clinical assays
Maintain equipment by performing assigned maintenance activities and
troubleshoot unexpected problems with equipment
Record data to monitor temperatures of incubation equipment
Evaluate inventory of supplies and reagents and communicate order needs
Operate complex equipment and computer programs related to equipment and LIS system
Maintain records of test results and archives of data
Maintain a neat and clean work environment
Perform proficiency testing to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies
Assist department in writing and maintaining standard operating procedures for
clinical assays. Document knowledge by reviewing and signing SOPs annually
~ Follow all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures such as attendance and time reporting
Other Duties
Participates in Service Improvement projects.
Performs other duties as requested.

Minimum Education/Certifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Molecular Biology, Chemical, Physical, Biological Science or other or related field
MT (ASCP) or MB (ASCP) certification preferred.
Meets CLIA requirements for testing personnel of molecular/genomic testing.
Minimum Work Experience
Minimum 2 years laboratory experience (one of which is in molecular diagnostic testing)
Technical insight and have hands-on experience with PCR techniques and DNA/RNA isolation methods
Experience in complex diagnostic molecular testing techniques, including hands-on experience with Next-Generation Sequencing and PCR assays.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
MUST be detail oriented and possess strong organizational skills.
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
Critical thinking with efficient and effective problem-solving skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
~ Professional-Clinical / Monday-Friday; weekends as needed
P hysical Demands Analysis :
~ Physical Demands: Must be able to lift or carry objects which may weigh up to 25 pounds; Full range of body motion; Manual and finger dexterity with eye-hand coordination; Requires standing, bending and walking for extensive periods; Requires the use of computer terminals and telephones; Requires working irregular hours (evenings, nights, weekends); Working Conditions: Frequent contact with water and alcohol gels (hand washing and cleaning); Hazardous working conditions in which the individual may be exposed to a risk of bodily injury through contact with moving instrumentation and body fluids.
Standing: 20-30% of the time
Walking: 20-30% of the time
Lifting: 1 - 5 % of the time Bending 1 - 5% of the time
Pulling/Pushing: 1 - 5% of the time
Sitting: 40 - 60% of the time
Vision: must be able to pass approved tests for Color Blindness.
Routine duties involve primarily laboratory-related conditions
Daily functions may include incidental exposure to vapors, fumes, moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, chemical and biological hazards, patient contact, needles/syringes, waste handling
Most functions require use of protective gear such as face shields, gloves, and fluid - resistant coats
