Acts as a lead network engineer in configuring, implementing, and supporting DPR’s information technology network and firewall infrastructure across Enterprise and Cloud platforms.

Manages and supports the integrity, security, availability, and performance of DPR LAN, WAN, Wireless, VPN, and virtual/cloud networks. Ensures the appropriate configuration, patching, and security of DPR’s network equipment and applications. Installs, configures, and administers network devices including Palo Alto firewalls, Cisco switches and access points, and data backup and recovery systems.

Monitors network performance, reviews logs, and responds to system alerts. Participates in IT projects and initiatives at the department, agency, or statewide level as a technical lead, team member, or departmental representative in networking related efforts.

Demonstrates specialization in network infrastructure system administration/operation and ability to apply high availability architectural concepts relative to networking components. Develops configuration guides and support documents for enterprise services. Reviews solution architecture and makes recommendations regarding technical and operational feasibility.

Represents DPR on the shared services support team to administer, manage, troubleshoot, and monitor the shared technology infrastructure and networks. Participates in network maintenance activities and communicates the system impact to the Information Technology Branch.

Working Conditions

Performance of these duties requires the use of computers, infrastructure hardware, networks, databases, electronic mail (both internal and external), voicemail, and the Internet.

May occasionally work evening or weekend hours in response to system outages/recovery, maintenance, or upgrade activities.

Occasional statewide travel on short notice may be required to support regional office locations. Travel may require overnight stays, driving, and flying.

Performance of the duties indicated for this position occasionally require the ability to lift and transport equipment up to 50lbs.

NOTE: This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Experience in enterprise network services operations
  • Experience in next generation firewalls such as Palo Alto
  • Experience in Layer 2/3 switching and Wi-Fi using Cisco products
  • Experience in managing and administrating Azure Cloud Network Services
  • Experience in automating administrative tasks through scripting and other enterprise tools
  • Experience with network virtualization technologies
  • Knowledge of Enterprise Architecture concepts, principles, and application
  • Knowledge of network monitoring tools, intrusion detection and prevention systems, Virtual Private Networks (VPN), and zero trust technology
  • Knowledge of backup, recovery, and disaster preparedness processes and concepts
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and with sensitivity
