Job Title: Manager of Health Information Management (HIM)

Location: Glendive, MT

Employment Type: Full-Time

The Opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced Manager of Health Information Management (HIM) to lead the development, implementation, and oversight of health information services. This key leadership role ensures compliance with federal and state laws, supports the organizations mission, and manages critical HIM functions including coding, reimbursement processes, release of information, birth and tumor registries, chart completion, and health information privacy.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily operations of the coding unit, including workload management, staffing, hiring, discipline, performance appraisals, and training.

  • Develop and implement long-range and short-term goals, objectives, plans, and programs for the department.

  • Assist in planning, developing, and controlling the departmental budget including staffing, capital equipment, and operational costs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate the impact of innovations and policy changes on the coding unit and implement necessary adjustments.

  • Design and improve systems to enhance data accessibility and resolve operational issues.

  • Prepare administrative reports for leadership and regulatory compliance.

  • Monitor accounts receivables related to un-coded charts to maintain acceptable levels.

  • Oversee the coding compliance program and conduct educational and training sessions for staff, physicians, billing, and ancillary departments on accurate coding and documentation standards.

  • Communicate regulatory, policy, and guideline changes effectively across relevant departments.

  • Lead coding audit efforts, ensuring accuracy and compliance; report findings and corrective actions to hospital directors and compliance officers.

  • Perform trend analyses to detect coding patterns and variations; compare performance with national and regional norms to identify areas needing improvement.

  • Review and address claim denials related to coding and medical necessity; implement corrective actions as needed.

  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among stakeholders to support the coding compliance programs success.

  • Oversee timely and accurate chart completion for all discharged patients.

  • Manage patient advocacy for release of information and support patient portal assistance.

  • Collaborate with Information Services to ensure data integrity and proper documentation.

  • Ensure compliance with policies and regulations regarding release of medical information.

  • Maintain accurate tumor and birth registry filings in accordance with state and federal requirements.

  • Monitor the accuracy and appropriateness of documents scanned into patient records.

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of coding principles and guidelines.

  • Strong understanding of hospital and professional services reimbursement systems.

  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and payer-specific regulations governing documentation, coding, and billing.

  • Excellent leadership, managerial, and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent education/certifications in Health Information Management (HIM) required.

  • Masters degree in Business Administration, Health Administration, or related field preferred.

  • Minimum of three years experience in hospital and professional coding (inpatient and outpatient) required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work.

  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
